HAWEBA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
ANNUAL SHOW.
The weather, which has been so adverse for some time, was kin^ enough to break this morning early. Consequently, though it had been responsible tor much spoiling of blooms, it was fine for the show itself. This opened toniay at two o'clock, and the attendance, considering everything,. was.quite good- As a display the benches created quite a favorable impression. The outstanding feature was, of course, the sweet peae. It. was fortunate, for the Society that Mr Westaway, who scored practically j all the prizes and the rose bowl last year, was opposed By Mr Holder, ,of Porirua. The result was \ a display of sweet peas such as perhaps has never been seen in Hawera before. The judges (Mr and Mrs Reader, of Stratford) were very complimentary, and spoke very well of the whole show. Of carnations, Mr Reader says that there is evident, .here as in Wanganui-and several .other shows he had visited, a want of knowledge; of varieties. This was a distinct handicap to judging. He favorably commented on the pansies, in which Mrs J. Garnett scored all the honors, and the collection of flowers shown by Dr. Thomson and Miss R. Goodson. Miss^ Lysaght'sJ on exhibition only, were also a fine collection. The vegetables, though not a large section, included a lot of very well-grown, well developed samples.
