ISLAND VOLCANO IN ERUPTION.

(Received Dec. 16, 12.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 16. 1 The captain1 of the steamer reports that the volcano at the 6unimip of Ambrym Island was. in eruption on December 6, and six new craters formed. On Sunday the 7th, Mount Minnie collapsed, threatening the i ssion station, Dr. Bowie's Hospital, an •. Car-' ciichael's property at Dip Point Next' morning they were compelled" >to take refuge in boats as two. new formed and overwhelming;their late holdings. The church and mission station at Craig's Cove had to ibe abandoned. There were no casualties among the white population, but many natives are supposed . to have perished. The steamer France, saved, five hundred natives who were taken to Port Sand-, ■wich. They-,were mostly women -and children and those left behind are ablebodied men. • The western part of the island ■is all afire and formed a most impressive spectacle. , , SYDNEY, Dec^ 16. The steamer. Hawkeshead,,which has arrived at Newcastle^, reports that while 240 miles off Fiji she jras thickly covered with pumice dust, presumably ■ from the Ambrym Island outbreak.
