TUESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1913. RAILWAY GOODS TRAFFIC.
(One of: the matteaTs 'which has recently been taken ,up bj the. Chamber of i Commerce concerns "town and country alike. For some.;years it has been the practice of the Haihvay Department to | restrict the carriage of goods for certain stations to two days of the week. Such stations iinclude Mokoia, Kakaraniea, Ball IRoad, Manutahi, and Whareroa. fduriously, in respect of No.rmanby, Kgaere, and other places north of Hawera, goods may be forwarded on acrpy day in the week. The inconvenience 'to Hawera business people and tfeo tfarmers in the localities to which T.es'trictions apply is often considerable, and especially in the busy .seasons. A 'farmer, for instance, at Manutahi, isiinvthe midst of his harvesting and bi'eaks an important part in one of His implements. It may be several "B#ys 1 before he can get repairs done, 'or for a new. part or a purchase of 'goods he may have to wait an unreasonably long time, unless the days on Trhich goods will be taken for his station 'happen to suit. There is evidently room for improvement in the arrangements affecting the local traffic to -which^vve have referred, and!it is to Tie hoped that the representations of the 'Chamber of Commerce will receive Jaworable consideration.
