PROFESSORIAL APPOINTMENTS

AUCKLAND, Nov. 17. The vacancies created in the Auckland University College professorial staff by the' resignation of Professors F. D. Brown and A. P. W. Thomas have now been filled..
For the. Chair of Chemistry 27 applications were,. received, 25 from England and two- from New Zealand.
For the Chair of Physics there were 25 applications, 19 from England and six from New Zealand.
Eighteen applications were received for the Chair, of Biology, 15. from England and three from New Zealand.
.The Selection Committee of the College Council, guided and assisted by the recommendation from the English Selection Committee of whom the High Commissioner (Hon. T. MacKenzie) was one; and acting with the power vested in them by the Council, selected for the Chair of Physics, Dr. G. Wilym Owen. M.A. _ (Cambridge), of Liverpool. This appointment was ratified at a meeting of the College Council this afternoon, when the other two vacancies were also filled , as follows:—Professor of Chemistry, Dr: Frederick Palliser Worley, D. Sc. (London), a N_w Zealander, at present engaged, in research work in England; Professor of Biology, Professor John Charles Johnson, M.A., of Cork University. The appointment of lecturer in geology was referred to a selection ! committee which will meet on Monday next to consider the three applications received, all from New Zealanders.
