A BUSY WATERFRONT,
BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.
WELLINGTON, Nov: 14. So busy was the waterfront to-day "that even the workless men in/!-the -Square must have realised the futility of their idleness. Several vessels were being worked, and cargo carted to and from the wharves, as though the strike was non-existent. The busiest ship in the port was the Athenic. At the Glasgow wharf frozen meat, cheese and other produce were piled into her holds all day long, and on the other side she j coaled from a hulk. Excellent work • lias been done, especially as regards the coaling. Up to mid-day no fewer than 2000 tons had been bunkered, leaving 800 tons to be placed aboard. It is "* Jhoped that by to-morrow morning all the coal will be abdard, and on Sunday it will be possible to make the vessel once-more spick and span, in readiness for her long voyage. The crew; have rendered yeoman service in handling the coal. The coal on the hulk was shovelled into the baskets by the stewards, many of them "greenhorns" at the game, but who worked with a will in fepite of sadly-blistered hands. Throughout it all they have never complained., The departure of the vessel, on Tuesday, will probably be the occasion of a demonstration fitting to such an important event. It is stated on good authority that , the mounted and foot specials are to be t present in strong force to give the vesksel a rousing send-off. Cargo operations on the Rimutaka were also proceeding apace, and hundreds of tons of cargo were unshipped during the day. In fact, so much cargo is being emptied out by the various ressels that the question of storage must soon become a serious-one. The vessels on which the cargo was being worked were the Athenic, Rimutaka, Manuka, Dorset, Himitangi, Kaitoa, Opawa, Wakatu, Waverlejj and Putiki. . .
