CLERKS' WAGES.

(Received Oct. 8, 12.30 p.m.) PERTH, Oct. 8. The Arbitration Court is considering the claim of the Clerks' Union for a minimum wage of £4 per week for males and females over twenty-one. It was stated in evidence that seven unmarried clerks were receiving £2 10s and spent 16s on clothing; 22 married clerks were averaging £4 10s, and spent the same. Mr Justice Burnside said he did not spend 15s a week on olothing, and it was absurd for youths to say, they spent £40 to £50 a year -on clothes. Clerks did not want four suits a veaT at five guineas each for ■every-day work. There_ was no good in spoon-feeding them with packets of cigarettes and three nights weekly at music halls. His Honor said bank clerks ought to get £4, but often they did not.
