on th-3 ocean beach at Manly (New South Wales) hist week were treated to a wonderful sight, when for over half an hour an immense whale made a stubborn defence against an attack by a'xmt half a dozen "killers." The sea was churned up, and the huge animal spouted to a great height. "Every few minutes thf- vhale would lift its tremendous tail right out of the water, and crash it down, evidently to crush its merciless enemies. The white bodies of the killers rose comnletely out of the waves as they made their attacks on the struggling monster. At times the whale would come right above the surface, and then roll quickly over, in its efforts, to destroy its pursuer's. A red track could plainly be seen in the smooth sea, where the stricken mammoth made its wav towards the south.
