A GROUNDLESS SCARE.

Considerable surprise, and alarm too, was manifested in North Taranaki on Saturday owing to the statemnet in the Daily News that_there had been an outbreak of smallpox at Waitara, three deaths resulting. However, no cases have been reported from Waitara, nor indeed from any other part of Taranaki. llie telegrams certainly mentioned Waitara, and the name occurs in the statement handed to the Wellington newspapers by Dr. Valintine. Clearly, however, a mistake has been made. There is either another Waitara north of Auckland, or the name has been confounded with Wairere, in the North, where an outbreak has occurred amongst the natives fhere. This much is certain —smallpox has not broken out in any part of Taranaki.
