NAPIER, June 17. In opening the Supreme Court, Mr Justice Chapman, remarking on the light calendar, said that there was almost a total absence of serious crime. ''I have had the same experience in Palmerston and Wanganui," he •said, "and the general condition, so far as crime is concerned, is very satisfactory."
Roland Birdling, on a charge of obtaing credit for £8 by falsely representing himself as a detective, pleaded guilty, and was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. John F.llis Smith; chaTged witH demanding. moHoy under threat to. discharge a revolv nand for assault, was acquitted. Georw Wilson Milne, for- opening a po^-fc-tl packet, was ordered to come up for sentence when called uppn.
