ACTRESSES AND FORTUNETELLERS.
Scotland Yard has taken decisive action against the West End fortune-tell-ers and palmists. Not only have they been informed that, if they continue openly to practise their profession, they will be prosecuted under the Vagrancy Act, but advertising has been stopped. For some time (says our London correspondent) reputable papers have refused their advertisements, now the police have stopped all newspaper advertisements, and also the parades of sand-wich-men, which had become a public nuisance. This means ruin to the for-tune-tellers, as they confess, and over 500 of them find their occupation practically gone. It is stated that among their best patrons have been actors and actresses and variety stage performers. There is -scarcely an actress, and very few actors, who do not consult one or more of these West End seers before accepting a new engagement, says a prominent theatrical agent. Another blow to the musical comedy beauties has been dealt by Mr George Edwardes. So ..many of these ladies have disorganised things by leaving to get married—lß thus left "The Quaker H iiA uri, ng its run ~~tbat ne--has now established an anti-marriage clause binding the lady not to leave to be married during rehearsals or the run.
