SENSATIONAL OCCURRENCE AT
NOUMEA

The steamer Pacifique reports a sensational occurrence at Noumea on August IS. A discharged convict named Franeschi, 68 years of age, being jealous of his wife, was was 45 years younger, quarrelled when he forbade her to visit her family, and struck her and threatened her life. She fled, and the.husband pursued her, and fired a rifle. He then barricaded himself in his house, and the police and the military arriving, a sie^e ensued. There was continuous firing on both sides. A soldier climbed on the roof, and was shot dead. Finally a fumigating pump was introduced under the door, and Franceschi, unable to breathe, ortened the door. A. fusilade began, and Franceschi was shot in eisht places, but continued shooting. Finally he was captured and removed to the hospital, where he died shortly after. Several of the military were wounded.
