GORE, Aug. 5. The young man Hunter, found on Friday afternoon suffering from a pea rifle bullet wound in the head, died at the hospital yesterday.
GREYMOUTH, Aug. 5. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt here at 3.30 a.m.
• A sudden death occurred yesterday, whea several young men were training for a boxing tournament. One of them, William Furness, aged 18, after a preliminary spar complained of being tired, and died in a few minutes.
A seventy-foot whale was stranded five miles north of Barrytown yesterday.
NAPIER, Aug. 5. Owing to an outbreak of German measles amongst the crew, the Pioneer cut her visit to Napier short and left to-day for Lyttelton, where she goes into quarantine.
The hardest frost of the season was experienced last night, and heavy snow fell in the back country.
WELLINGTON, Aug. 5.At the Supreme Court to-day Geo. Paul, alias Herbert Bartlett, said to be only 20 years of age, was brought up for sentence on two charges of breaking and entering and theft in the Nelson district. The Chief Justice imposed a sentence of one month, to be concurrent with a term of three months which the prisoner is at present serving.
At the Magistrate's Court reserved .judgment was delivered in the case in which William Scott and Henry Martindale were charged with publishing a document containing a notification as to betting on horse races at Trentham. The Magistrate said the onus of proof was on the prosecution, and he was not prepared to say that publication had been made. The information was dismissed.
