Mr A. G. Bennett, of Manaia, has "been appointed solicitor for the Governjnent Advances to Settlers Department.
The funeral of Mr A. H. Hobbs, who tvus accidentally killed on Friday ev?.uing, took place on Sunday afternoon, and was .attended by a large number of residents and settlers. People came from all parts of the province. The Yen. Archdeacon Cassell conducted the service.
Mr W. Taylor, formerly of Pahiatua, »nd who was recently appointed inspector of nuisances in Hawera, commenced Ms duties this morning.
Many will regret to hear of the death ■** •?- Henrich Shulze, of Alton, at the age of twenty-eight years. He was a specially studious, thoughtful young man, ana was liked by all with whom he came an contact.
Mr Robert McNab left Wellington last week by the Maitai for Sydney, •where he proposes doing research work at the Mitchell Library in connection with his historical publications.
The Earl of Liverpool, who is named the successor of Lord Islington as Governor of New Zealand, is 42 years of «ge. He served in the South African war. and was made major in 1907. He vas some time A.D.C. to Lord Cadogan •when the latter was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and later was State Steward and Chamberlain to the present Lordliientf^ant of Ireland (Lord Aberdeen). Xiord Liverpool owns estates in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. His recreations .. are hunting, shooting, cricket, and racquets. He married in 1897 t^e only, daughter of' Viscount Monck.
