MORE POLAR EXPLORATION

An American "■ . ~.. , arranged to le expedition has this month . <^Pc Breton Island ducting ' ,tor the PurPOS6 of conunchai in some of the The '^^ areas °^ ne -Arctic basin. • , loaders are Mr George Borup, as- ' -iStant curator of geology at the f American Museum of National History, and Mr Donald McMillan, who were both members of Admiral Peary's last expedition. The object of the venture is "to reach and map out Crocker Land, north-west of Grant Land, and to make scientific studies along the route and in other parts of the Arctic regions, as circumstances may permit." The party will go north by special steamer, collecting dogs and whale and walrus meat on the way, and will establish winter quarters on Bache Peninsula, which projects From Ellesmere Land into Kane Basin. Then the vessel will return and the explorers will busy themselves conveying their winter supplies by sledge to Cape Thomas Hubbard. With the return of the sun in 1913 they will leave this point and push across the ice to Crocker Land. The rugged country has not been visited by white me"n, and it was first seen- by Peary in 1906. It is claimed by Canada, but if it proves to be an island or group of'islands, as is quite probable, the Americans will take possession. During the following winter the party will proceed to Etah, and in 1914 a journey will be j made eastward to the summit of the ' ice-cap of Greenland, at the widest part of that island. The far interior of Greenland has not been visited since Nansen made the first crossing in the days before he achieved his ''furthest north" record. The work of this expedition will be interesting, and ought to provide plenty of adventure for the intrepid explorers.
