OKAIAWA.
LFBOM OUR OWN COBEESFONDENT.]
■ The ladies' annual ball, which was ■ lield on Monday evening, was, as usual, *■ a highly successful function. The evenly ing was beautifully fine, and the tern■ tperature at just the right degree for 1/ <lancing. There was a large attend1/ ance. A fair number of ladies appeared [■ jr fancy dress, but there were only W tiiree gentlemen so attired. Those apft pearing in fancy costumes were: Mes- - dames Olivers (Rainb9w), Percy (Win- "- ter) and Cantelin (Dalmation); Misses f: Ohivers'(Folly), Batten (Witch), Cante- ': lin (Pierette), Eileen Canteliii (Flower $■.'■ fiirl), Putt (Night), Sellers (Stars and '■' "Stripes), E. johnstone (Grace Darling), Hremer (Quaker Girl), Walsh (HouseI maid), Birchall (Nurse), Messrs Short ¥ <Black-and-White), R. Penny (Butcher), ■ .and Hall (Baker). A sit-down supper of excellent quality was provided by :-: the ladies. Beesley's Orchestra supplied the music in its usual capable «tyle. The duties of M.C.'s were well carried out by Messrs J. Barclay and E. Doyle. A most enjoyable gathering
was brought to a close at 2.30. Okaiawa has received many congratulations upon the excellence of the disv trict court at the recent show. The pro--1 duce was of splendid quality, and was most tastefully arranged by Mr H. Jietts, Mrs Ohivers, and Misses Betts : -and Hicks. Another resident who is deserving of special mention in connection ; , with the exhibit is Mr Z. Tiplady. Mr ' Tiplady assisted to collect the produce, \ conveyed it to Haw era, helped with the (staging, and brought all that was unsold liack to the township. It was a matter for regret that there was no competition in this class, and my feelings were identical with those of another resident, who i^marked, "I would rather run a good second than have a }: walk-over." I learn that complaints ; were made by other districts that the / space allotted was too large, thereby entailing a great deal of labor in collecting sufficient produce to fill up, and t ifchat in consequence the Show Company |r propose to cut down the space next k year. In previous years there were ft complaints that the space was too small. Hi think it will be a pity if the comcarries out its intention in this Okaiawa is a small district, is further away than any other diswhich have exhibited in previous ; but no difficulty was experienced HMn -getting sufficient produce. Then, f again, it is quite impossible to make I an attractive display in a cramped area. I would like to add that those who ar- ' ranged the Okaiawa court at the show ; expressed their appreciation of the courr tesy shown them by Mr Conroy.
