LOVE FOR EDINBURGH.
A correspondent sends to the Scotsman the following verses, which a-ve said to have heen written hy Harriet Miller (daughter of the celebrated Hugh Miller) in 1870:— Oh, to bide in Edinbro', Proud city of the North, Who sits like a leddy Looking ower the bonny Forth. For never queenly leddy By faithful lover knight Was loved wi' such a tenderness, Such passion of delight. I love thee in the winter, When the stormy north winds blaw, And thy beauty is a' covered Wi' a bridal veil o' snaw. And in the bashfu' springtime, When thy gardens are a' green, Wi' tender, bursting leaf-buels, And emerald grass between. And oh, the summer sunsets, When thy windows shine all bright Wi' a glorious glowing crimson,. A radiant, ruby light! And 'oh, the nights o' harvest, When the moon rides up on high, And the wee stars a' aboot her Are glimmering in the sky; And a thousand lamps are twinkling In every street and square, And the shimmer o' the moonlight Is about thee everywhere; And the starlight and the lamplight Mak' a glimmer and a gleam, Till thy beauty seems unearthly, Like a city in a dream. Oh, my bonny, bonny leddy! I'm fain to bide wi' thee — In a; thy princely palaces Hast thou nae nook for me? There's none o' a' thy mony bairns Has ever loved thee mair Than I who now maun leave thee Wi' a weary heart and sair. Oh, keep some wee bit corner In thy grand auld heart for me, Where when I'm auld and weary, I may creep back to deeYouth's passion and its poetry May then be cauld and chill, But this faithfu' heart shall love thee Till its every pulse is still.
