STRIKES BARRETTS REEF
BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON. May 18. The Union Company's steamer Haupiri, which left Wellington last night for Pioton and the East Coast, struck Barrett's Reef, and as she was making water, Captain Morrison ran her into Evans Bay, and beached her at 2 a.m. close to the Union Company's new wharf. The vessel has a list 'to port, and water m two of her holds. It was thick weather when she struck. WELLINGTON, May 18. The Haupiri was not beached. The vessel is lying at the Union Company's wharf at Evans Bay, with a heavy list to port. The cargo in the fore hatch is chiefly manure, which is damaged, but the general merchandise in the other hold is not damaged. The Haupiri carried no passengers, amd the impact was only a slight one. There is a hole in the fore hatch. This mornine a powerful pumping plant was installed, preparatory to placing the vessel on the patent slip, which is just alongside the wharf. Captain Morrison states that the Pencarrow light was obscured by mist and driving rain.
