LITERARY NOTICES.
Mr W. H. Trimble, who- is, we be--lieve, not unknown in Taranaki, has just published a singularly interesting "Catalogue of a Collection of Walt Whitman Literature," compiled by himself. Mr Trimble resides at cord," St. Leonards, Otago, and lovers of Whitman, all the world over, will be grateful to him for his scholarly compilation about the superb American poet, whose essential greatness makes him, in comparison with the average of his contemporaries and his own country's literary men, what Mount Egmont is to a series of sand dunes. Mr Trimble necessarily includes in his Collection Australian and New Zealand contributors to Walt Whitman literature, and these include himself and his wife, the late" Mr William Gay, MiBernard O'Dowd (the Walt Whitman of Australasia), Miss Jessie Mack-ay,, poetess and journalist, and Mr John Christie, Editor of the Hawera Star. Messrs Ward, Lock and Co., Limited; have, through Mr F. H. Boase, of Ha'wera, sent us a copy of the WindsorMagazine for May. The average of the Windsor is consistently high, and tlie May number is above the average ml various ways. The fiction is at oncewholesome and interesting, and those to whom artistic, musical and historical' subjects appeal, will find satisfaction in the well-written and appropriately illustrated articles on Rossetti, London'smusical season, and the reign of Charles the Second.
