OPINION AT ELTHAM

At a meeting of the Eltham Chamber Commerce on Friday night (says our own correspondent) it was resolved, that a delegation from the Chamber wait on the Railway Commission^ fa conjunction with the Railway League with a view to urging the reservecP route for the Opunake railway 16Seivec£ ..In Irt" 1? in support of the resolution, Mr Buckendge said that they had' a very strong case for the reserved route Eltham had every claim to W considered. What was now the Strat-tord-Ongarue line was originally intended to be Eltham-Ongarue. Bhe earlY maps showed the survey from Eltham toloko, and anyone who knew the country must admit that the engineers were right m their original plan, both as ! legards cost of construction and th& configuration of the country. Besides, afc the time the routes were mapped out, there were no vested interests to influ ence the position. He added that thereserved route was centrally situated to serve the district with feeders, and besides the country was morally committed to the route. Mr Parrott said it would be necessary to have as strong a delegation aspossible as some of 'the representstives Jroro other bodies would be unable to attend. The Mayor had b«en urgently called away from town, Cr. Stanners was ill. Mr Marx would be unable to attend, and Mr Quin would be in Wellington. It was meolved that Messrs Buckeridee and Hill be delegates from theLnamber.
