METALLIC TELEPHONE SYSTEM

Much was said last year about the installation of the metallic telephone system in Hawera. The Chamber of Commerce had the matter in hand, off and on, for a long, time, and a good yeal of correspondence passed between it and the Department. At last it was decided that the installation should be made, and in a letter dated December 15, 1911, the Secretary of the Department definitely said that it was proposed to proceed with the installation as soon as the constructing gang, then working at Napier, had finished with that town. He added that the work at Hawera should begin not later than the beginning of 1912. Since then nearly six months have passed, but as yet there is no sign of begin- j ning with the installation of the ! metallic system in Hawera. Perhaps the Department still has its hands fullj of such work elsewhere, but, lest it i should have forgotten Hawera, it may be pardonable to say that Hawera has not forgotten it, nor its promise to j install the metallic telephone system, which would be much appreciated In the community. . j
