THE PREMIER AT FAIRLIE
BY TMiKGBAPB—PRBBB ASSOCIATION. TTMARU, May 12. The Premier was present at the, banquet given at Fairlie to Mr T. Buxton on Friday evening. Mr F. REGillinghani, chairman of the County Couriv. ciT and the South Canterbury HospitalHoard, presided. The chairman spoke of the Local Government Bill and condemn-
Ed it ronndly, its centralising principle being a great mistake. Mr Mackenzie,- in his reply, said that a Bill had long been asked for, and local bodies were being naked to say what sort of Bill they
wanted. Speaking of agriculture, the Prime Minister said that the Govern- « ment were importing another first-class dairy instructor, and also a dairying chemist to instruct people how to make the best of the by-products. Mr Buxton
protested against the Opposition saying i;hat the present Ministry had no right
to carry on
They had a majority and
a head likely to do better work than Mr Massey Avas capable of. Mr Mackenzie complained of the Opposition's Attempt to belittle him, as he had done nothing to deserve such attacks. The Cabinet was determined: to do good work if given a chance. He asked to be given that chance. The alternative ■would not be Mr Massey, whom he likened to Moses, who never reached the
promised land. Personally, he would not -rare if he was relegated to private life. He might then be able to make a little money, which a Minister could not do.
