POLICE AND MINERS IN CONFLICT

They threw bricks and used clubs. A fierce melee resulted for half an hour. Several strikers were fatally hurt. The troops finally came to the policemen's rescue.

Women took a prominent part in the attacks on the police, and six were arrested.

The disturbances were chiefly fomented by the foreign element.
