LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The West Coast Native Leases Commission opens in Hawera to-day at 2 o'clock. It was on the 7th of May, 1856, that the first New Zealand Ministry, under responsible Government, came into existence, with Mr Sewell as its chief. The total railway revenue for the year ended March 31 "last was £3,676,509, and the expenditure £2,465,895. For the previous year the figures were £3,----494,181 and £2,303,271 respectively. There was a large number of people in town on both race days and nights, but the police report a total absence of serious crime. The only cases to come under their notice were those of two intoxicated Maoris. The following new subscribers have been added to the Manaia Telephone Excuange: No. 10, H. E. Candy, privato residence; No. 11, Dr. Thos. A. iViriloy, private residence ; and No. i 3, Tlev. E. J. Bergin, private residence. The mission at Gospel Hall, Princes street, will be continued this evening at half-past seven. Mr Isaac is said to be an interesting preacher, and doubtless many will avail themselves of the opportunity to hear him expound the Gospel. A Press Association message from Wellington states that an agitation is on foot there to prevent Chinese establishing themselves in the furniture trade in New Zealand. .This action was occasiond by a rumur that an attempt was being made by, or on behalf of a party of Chinese craftsmen, to es- ! tablish a factory in Christchurch. I New Zealand has 124 counties, 113 | boroughs, 60 town districts, 19 road j districts, 41 river districts, 43 harbor boards, 13 education districts, 42 land j drainage districts, and 37 hospital dis- | tricts. During the month of March 3365 persons arrived in New Zealand and 4672 took their departure—an excess of deuartures of 1307. In the same month '• last year the excess of departures was 1207. The shareholders in the Hawera County Electric Light Company may congratulate themselves on this year's operations. For the first time in the company's history the directors are able to place before the shareholders a strong financial credit balance, and doubtless year by year will now show a steady increase of business and good profits for the shareholders- The operations for the year just ended show a profit of £1,852 I*, and this will enable the payment of a dividend of 5 per cent, on ordinary shares, and 7 per cent, on preference shares. In addition to this, a sum of £500 will be placed to a reserve account, and £617 3s 8d carried forward to next year's accounts. The company's general business has been expanding in a gratifying manner, and the revenue from light, power, meter rent, and trade account shows an increase of £"700 0s 9d over the previous year's total. Entries are advertised for Dalgety and Company's Wanganui East sale, and for Mr Newton King's Toko aale. The Patea Harbor Board invites tenders for lease of a farm. A dance will be held in the Otakeho Hall on Tuesday, 14th inst. Lewis and Co., land agents, draw attention to some dairy farms for immediate sale. An advertiser wishes to dispose of a farm m the Hokianga district. Smith and Easton will sell an English .303 sporting rifle among their usual lines to-morrow and the drapery sale will be continued at 2 o'clock. Messrs Pratt and Co. call attention to their stock of blankets and bedding Newton King will sell cattle at Stratford yards on Tuesday, May 14. The annual meeting of the Hawera Acclimatisation Society will be held on Friday, May 17. Leave the office with a headache and ■to home? The remodelling of the British Navy will give general satisfaction to the people throughout the Empire. The reorganisation may be interpreted as an answer to. Germany's activity, and there is no doubt that the proposed first fleet ia formidable. New Zealanders will be satisfied with this arrangement, just as they are satisfied with the quality and flavor of Cresqent Tea, which is sold at Is lOd and 2s per lb.—Advt.
