The Premier, of Victoria (Mr Murray), in opening a Roman Catholic church: bazaar at Werribee on January 15, deeiared that though there were many waysof raising money for churches* and clmreh purposes, apart from direct giving, the bazaar was the best means. It did not depend on the efforts of one person, but on the combined efforts and . co-operation >of many. This view is warmly opposed by Anglican Church authorities. The current issue of the Church Chronicle, the official organ of the- . Ballarat Anglican Diocese, states that the recrudescence of the evil of raffles in that diocese has caused much! perplexity and distress. The subject was mentioned to Archdeacon Hindley, who stated thai the Church of England, as. a Chinch, had pronounced'unequivocally against raffles in every synod, diocesan, provincial and general. "At the last meeting of the Standing Committee of the Province of Victoria," added the Archdeacon, "it was resolved to ask the. Attorney-General not to issue any license for holding art unions in connection with the Church of England, save at .the express request of the Bishop of the diocese."
