ROME, Jan. 16. The reports concerning the peace aegotiations between Italy and Turkey are premature. ,' v • Speaking of. the situation to-day a prominent official said: "We, as the victors, cannot ask for peace, nor can we initiate negotiations towards that end. *

"Italy is ready to negotiate with an open mind if advances are made by Turkey, but only on the basis that Tripolitana and Cyrenaica shall be annexed, according to the Royal decree of December 12."

CONSTANTINOPLE, Jan. ftl6. Government officials declare that the rumors of. a compromise having been reached by Italy and Turkey are unfounded.
