WELLINGTON, Jan. 22. The following cable has been received from the High 'Commissioner, datjed London, January 20: — Mutton: The market is quiet. Trade for all classes is very slow and prices are barely maintained. Qonterbury is not quoted; North Island, 4|d (limited supply). . ..:■'• Lamb: The market is firmer and there is more demand for New Zealand at 51d. ..,.\ Beef: The market remains firm and there are signs of improvement. New Zealand hinds, 3gd; fores, 3d. The butter market is quieter. High prices and anticipated labor troubles affect the market. Buyers are holding back expecting .prices to go lower. The average price for the week for choicest New Zealand butter was-130s; Australian, 1275; Argentine, 1275; Danish. 1345; Siberian, 1295. Cheese: The market •is quiet, and prices are slightly weaker. The average price for the week for finest New Zealand cheese, white, was 735; colored, 725.

Hemp: The market is firm, but quiet, at an advance .on last quotations. Spot New Zealand good fair, £22; fair, £21 per ton; forward shipment, New Zealand good fair, £22; Manila, £23. The output of Manila for the week was 24,000 bales.

Wool: The market shows signs of strength. Americans are buying crossbreds freely.

Hops: The market shows signs ,of strength. There is small supply and a General and active demand. English, £13, California*!, £12. Kauri gum market: Dark brown selected, rescraped, 110s to 140s; dark brown, three-quarter scraped, 85Vto 80s; dark brown chips, drossy, 30s to 32s 6d; re-scraped pale amber, £11 to £12; three-quarter pale scraped, £7. Diggers' chips, good, 455. There is a very moderate demand, 650 cases being offered, and 200 sold. The stock -on December 31. 1911, was 381 cases.
