MR H. B. IRVING AT ELTHAM.
The box plan was opened at Carman's this morning for the first and only appearance in Eltham of Mr H: B. Irving, which will take place at the Town Hall on Tuesday night next, when the son of the famous Sir Henry Irving will be presented by the J. C. Williamson, Ltd., management in his magnificent interpretation of Hamlet. When Mr H. B. Irving first appeared as Hamlet, H. B. Walkley, the London Times critic, said of the performance: "It is a sterling performance. It absorbs the attentention, fires the imaginaton, and~satisfies the reason. In the technical qualities of elocution, deportment and business, it is a little masterpiece. It is one of the best 'Hamlets' this generation has seen." Surely that wa° high praise to be bestowed on the first attempt of a young man to pourtray one of the greatest characters in dramatic literature. But since then Mr Irving has had the benefit of a wider and richer experience in his profession, and Eltham theatregoers are likely to witness one of the best Hamlets in the history of the colonial stage.
