by a three-fiths majority- As a matter of fact three of the ovh.er electorates which did not maintain '"■«& three-fifths majority, had very substantial majorities, as follows: OAMARU, £03; INVERCARGILL, 752; MATAIJKa, 531. The only No-license district which went back on its vote was Ashburton, and as everyone knows, there were special circumstances and reasons for this. If No-license does not commend "itself to the people of New Zealand, how does Mr Maguire account for the fact that the neighboring districts to No-license districts fall into line and adopt Nolicense. For instance, BRUCE (adjoining Chitha): License vote, 1872; NoHcense vote, 2988, a majority for Nolicense of 1114. EDEN (close to Grey Lynn): License vote, 2249; No-license vote, 4051; majority for No-license, 1812 IN OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND, out of 14 licensing electorates, FIVE are UNDER NO-LICENSE and SEVEN OTHERS CARRIED NO-LICENSE by LARGE MAJORITIES, although not sufficient for three-fifths; and only two electorates voted in favor of License and these two only, by a joint majority of 556. IN DUNEDIN (North, East and Central), where 20,633 PEOPLE voted the vote was ONLY SHORT of the three^ fifths majority in favor of No-license BY 697. IN TAIERI (adjoining Clwtha) it was ONLY SHORT BY 21 VOTES • [N CHALMERS (another adjoining electorate), it was ONLY SHORT BY 179 VOTES. WHAT CAN MR MAGUIRE SAY TO THESE INDISPUTABLE FACTS AND FIGURES? The vote in the other two No-license electorates was as follows: CLUTHA, restoration; 981; non-restoration 1839 —NEARLY DOUBLE IN FAVOR OF NO-LICENSE. GREY LYNN: Restoration, 2050; Non-restoration, 5076 — 2\ TIMES AS MANY IN FAVOR OF NOLICENSE. To'use Mr Maguire's own refined expression, does No-license stink is the nostrils of the people who have tried it? • (6) PROPORTION OF VOTES POLLED Mr Maguire also stated that the proportion of people who voted was only 77 pei- cent, in 1905 of the total number of voters, and said this was a small percentage in a free democratic country like New, Zealand. But; as I pointed out, the people are gradually becoming educated, and that in 1908 414,271 voted out of 537,003, being 78£ per cent., and that I certainly considered that virtually four-fifths of the total number was a very large percentage, in fact I believe that in no other country except New Zealand would you obtain such a large percentage of voters to record their votes. (7) MR MAGUIRE'S ILLOGICAL ASSUMPTION. Mr Maguire, in his speech stated that over 122,000 had failed to record their votes on bhe Licensing "question, and | said it was fair to assume that these were satisfied with the existing state of affairs, and were in favor, of Continuance. To my mind this is most absurd and illogical. I pointed out to Mr Maguire- that a less number voted on the political elections than voted on the Licensing question, and I consider that the political election is quite as important., if not mure important, than the licensing election, and 126,000 had failed to record their votes on the political election. If I follow Mr Maguire's logic, then 1 ought to assume that these 126,----fXX) were in fay or of the Government, and did not desire any change, but were satisfied with the existing order of things. MARVELLOUS INCREASE IN NOLICENSE VOTE. (8.) Mr Maguire said that the very fact that 18b, 140 votes were recorded in favor of License was sufficient reason why the liberty of the people should not be interfered with; but Ec - did. not state,-as I pointed out, jbhat in 12 years the License vote, notwithstanding the increase in the population, had only increased by 48,560, whereas in the same period the No-License vote had increased by 123,159, showing that the people were becoming more and more educated, and that No-License was commending itself to the people of New Zealand. I also pointed out that the No-L-cense vote had increased in three years (namely from 1905 to 1908) by 22,703 votes, and the License vote only by 5256, i.e., in the last three years previous to 1908 the No-License vote had increased by more than four times the License vote. Who can say by how much the No-Licerise. vote has increased since 1908 ? I will deal (inter alia) on Saturday j evening with the crime statistics in, NoLicense districts, as Mil MAGUIRE in his Patea address ADMITS DISTINCTLY that the prosperity of, the country does not hmge upon its financial prosperity, but that the MORAL FABRIC ™™c country J*s a GREATER ELEMENT in saying if the people are a progressive and prosperous people. j MASTERTON GENERALLY. MR JAMES MACGIixCGOR, of Masterton, who knows more about this place and district than any other man Vl V Zealand > is to lecture here on 4th DECEMBER next; and I CHALLENGE MR MAGUIRE to disprove or refute any statements that may be made by MR MACGREGOR at this meeting. The question of No-License m Masterton district generally will be dealt with very fully by Mr Mactrregor. Before closing, I cannot refrain from expressing my appreciation of the very fair and impartial report of Mr Maguire's meeting at Hawera which was given by your newspaper, and to express, my personal appreciation of the courtesy arid consideration which has always been shown by the proprietor, the editor, and staff officers of your newspaper towards myself in connection with this No-License battle. *4641 H.
