Desperate efforts are still being made by the Liberal party to belittle the reports of the enthusiastic reception accorded to Mr Massey at Wintori, and the Press Association agent is being blamed.
Mr Martin, the Opposition organiser, however, states (a special telegram to the Taranaki Herald reports) emphatically that the Press Association report really understated the enthusiasm that prevailed. As a matter of fact, he says there has never been such an enthusiastic demonstration at a political meeting in New Zealand since the days when Mr Seddon was at the zenith of his powers, and it is doubtful even whether Mr Seddon himself, ever had a more enthusiastic reception. The scene at the close could not very well be exaggerated. Hands, hats, sticks and handkerchiefs were waved in the air, and cheers followed cheers for several minutes. It was indeed a memorable meeting, and all the more so because it took place in the centre of the electorate represented by the Prime Minister himself.
_The Press Association report and Mr Martin s statement are born out-by the accounts of the meeting in both the Southland Times and the Otago Daily limes. Moreover, Mr Massey's receptions m Oamaru and Timaru, both hitherto .Government strongholds, were also remarkably enthusiastic. At Timaru, in a crowded meeting, a motion of no^confidence m the Government was Car, ™ ?7 overwhelming majority, and Mr Massey was cheered to the echo! A similar motion was carried afc IJarcaru, another Government stronghold. &
