WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above was held last evening. Present: Messrs V. Pirani (chairman), E. Dixon,._F. Purnell, P. ODea, and F. M. Spurdle. Leave of absence was granted Messrs A Fraser, J. P. Aldridge and D. H. Outline, M.P. finance.—-The bank balance on 14th October was reported to be dr. £4290. Appointments.—The following appointments were agreed to: Oroua Downs, Miss F. McKenzie as assistant; Orautona, Mr A. T. C. Sellars as sole teacher; Alton, Mr T. R. Best as sole teacher; Rata, Miss I. Young as assistant; Wanganui, Misa R. A. G. Pinches as assistant. Leave of Absence. —Leave of absence was granted as follows: B. C. MtaClure {Kakaramea) two weeks, E. Carthew (Feilding) three weeks, K. E. R. Wilson (Terrace End) one week, C. Fergusson (Aramoho) four weeks, F. A. Bates (Feilding) to attend examination, Mr Morgan (Feilding), Miss Yortt and W. J. Andrews. REPORTS. Mr Dixon reported on exits at Kaponga school. —Left with Mr Dixon to have carried out. Mr Dixon's report on the drains at Auroa was adopted. He recommended ike expending of £13. Mr Dixon's report on chimneys of residence at Eltham was also adopted. Mr Braik reporting on the request of the Catholic authorities re examination of candidates for proficiency certiiicates, recommended that a central hall should be hired where" required and the children sent there for examination. It was decided, on the suggestion of Mr O'Dea. that the children should be examined in the familiar surroundings of their own school, but that a supervisor should be appointed by the a? —?— '— should be appointed, to be approved by the Board.
The Truant Officer reported on an outbreak of heki heki among the Maoris at Okaiawa, recommending that a new school should be built, as the present school was overcrowded. —Referred to the headmaster. GENERAL. The Board's four votes were cast for Mr G. Carson as member of the Advisory Board of the Training .College. It was stated that Mr Whittington, of Hawke's Bay, was the only oth«r nomination, and that the flawke's Bay Board had three votes and the Taranaki Board one.
H. M. Rockell (Hawera) was granted permission to transfer scholarship to Feilding; D.H.S. The Eltham Committee is to be informed that the Board has no power to give one of the teachers an increase In salary. Mangamingi applied for a teacher s residence and an application is to be made for a grant. ■ Mr Bone, of the Hawera School Committee, waited on the Board and put forward a scheme for repairing and improving the school grounds, etc. He explained the urgent need for the work which was proposed to be carried out. The estimated cost was £195. £56 8s 6d had been collected, which, of course, carried the Government subsidy. Other amounts brought the total up to £137. There was, therefore, £57 19s wanted, but the committee proposed to promote a concert, so that probably £40 would be wanted. —After discussing the proposal the Board decided to grant £25. The enterprise of the committee and of Mrs Bone was commended by the Board.
The contractor at Fraser road is to t>e asked for a price for new sheltershed.
IVrr Strack, Hawera, forwarded a very interesting report on the school garden, ;tnd also sent m 524 packets of seeds for ■distribution. —-The Boird passed a resolution af thanks to Mr Strack.
