In a telegram to Mr McKeown,-of Pihama, Hon. R. McKenzie, says heantends to leave Stratford for Opunaire on Saturday forenoon, and return to Stratford on Monday Via Hawera and Eltham.
Mr C. N. Raine, manager of the Hawera branch of the Bank of New Zealand, who with Miss Raine has been on an extended holiday trip throughout the Dominion, returned to town .on Thursday. He, however, does not resume duty for a fortnight. The Yen. Archdeacon Harper was cordially welcomed back to Timaru from a prolonged holiday in the Old AVorld by a large gathering of parishioners on Thursday evening; He explainedx that he- was entering on his 79th year, and he felt that the cure of so important a parish should be in the hands of a younger man. His resignation does not take effect till ei^ht months hence.
• v The death is announced of Mr (x. A. •P^rce who for some years (part" of which! he.'spent in Hawera) was connected with the sawmilling timber industry. After leaving Taranaki he went to South Africa, and, on returning settled in the Auckland district. He died at Cambridge, Aucklahd> -the % cause of death being hemorrhase of, the brain. ■ • ; '■

Harbison, who for ,the past six iirid a half years has been second m charge of the engineering department of Messrs Borthwiek and Sons' Waitarai Freezing Works, has secured the appointment as chief of the Patea Freezing Works, and will shortly remove, to' ing Works, and, the Waitara Mail says/ will-shortly remove to that town.: 'Mr, Harrison lias excellent qualifications for his new position, and doubtless his new employers will*soon recognise the wisdom of their >choice.
Major C. D. Mackintosh, of the sth Regiment Wellington Rifles (late Battalion Wellington Rifles), Avho has resigned, has been a soldier all his life. He served in the Maori wars when a very young man, and wears the Maori war medal. His record of service is as follows-.—Second Battalion of 14th Regiment, eight years; Wellington Veterans, two years; New Zealand Armed Constabulary, six years; Waikato Cavi rj j two years; Wellington Garrison bandmaster, two years; commander Wellington Guards, four years; commander Highland Rifle Battalion (now sth Regiment), five years- It was always Major Mackintosh's ambition to instil into the men under his command the necessity for maintaining a high moral tone, holding that to be a soldier of the King and a defender of one's country should produce the very highest qualities of true manhood in a cTtizen soldier. Major Mackintosh is a nephew of the late Major Clare who was officer commanding the Waikato district, and first cousin of -Colonel Roberts, S.M., of Tauranga, Colonel Roberts won the New Zealand Cross m the engagement in which Major Yon lempsky lost his life. As Major Mackintosh has been over fifteen years an officer he will be entitled to a step up, in rank on his retirement, and no doubt will be gazetted a lieutenantcolonel. Major C. H. Turner will" now be second in command of the regiment
