SPEECHES IN THE SQUARE

A CHRISTCHURCH CASE

BY TELEGRAPH—PBESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, April 7. The Magistrate gave judgment in a case in which the validity of the by-law affecting meetings in Cathedral square was called in question. The defendant asserted that he had a right to hold a meeting and deliver speeches in the square, but the Magistrate held that the City Council had no right to make a by-law and decide to whom permission should be given to hold meetings, and that the by-law was reasonable.
