Mr G. C. St. George, formerly accountant of the Hawera branch of Hie Bank of New Zealand, and Mr Leo Espagne are spending a few days in Hawera. Prior to leaving on a trip to Australia, Mr F. K. Turnbull received a presentation from the New Plymouth Swimming Club. After his return Mr Turnbull will commence practice in the legal profession. Mr Herbert Bailey, whom many will remember as in practice here as a dentist, and who has been resident in Sydney for some years, will shortly leave to settle in London. Mrs Bailey was Miss Lena Espagne, formerly well known in Hawera. A wedding of some interest to Hawera residents was solemnised at Dunedin recently, ' the contracting parties being Mr Frank D. Sargent, third son of Mr R. W. Sargent, of Hawera, and Miss Dora Morrison, of Dunedin. The Misses Morrison and Sargent were the bridesmaids, and Mr Hanna, of Christ-, church, was best man. Mr Burling, of Waikanae, now considerably past being a centenarian, was one of the Canterbury pilgrims, a good many of whom were present on the occasion of, the sixtieth anniversary of the province on Monday last. It was remarked how wonderfully hale and hearty were the men and how surprisingly young looking were the women comprising these still remaining brave old pioneers. Among holiday-makers from Hawera the experience of Mr E. Dixon was probably singular, for he went to jus mother's residence at Bunnythorpe, where thirty-six members of the family gathered. At one time they totalled forty-eighty but death and. re% moval have caused a diminution of numbers, which, however, are still remarkable. Some years ago another branch of the family used to hold an annual cricket match at Wellington, when they mustered two full teams of eleven each. That axemen and sawyers appreciate the good work done on their behalf by Mr F. E. Hardy, the popular secretary of the Eltham Carnival, was shown yesterday, when Messrs C. Miley (Australian champion) and D. Pretty (New Zealand champion'), accompanied by Mr A. Hansen and others, visited the hospital at New Plymouth and made a presentation to Mr Hardy.' The presentation took the form of an electroplate hot water service and inkstand, bearing the following inscription: "Presented to F. E. Hardy, Esq., from axemen who competed at the Axemen's Carnival. 1910." Dr Henry, who has been conducting a series of missions all over New Zealand, has returned to Wellington, and is spending a short holiday in the city. The time occupied by the missions has been eight months and one week, and the total number of meetings held has reached 501, with an attendance of< over 300,000. The number of confessions reported by signed cards and handed into the personal work committees is 8011. Owing to the completion of the engagement with Mr and Mrs Pott's, Dr Henry has had to secure the services of a new singer, and this colleague, jvlr John Carnegie Farquhar, will arrive by the Sydney boat. A new campaign will conrmence in Greymouth early next month.
