AN UNUSUAL PHENOMENON.

MASTERTON, Nov. 30. • An unusual phenomenon occurred in the northern portion of the town yesterday afternoon, when a whirlwind from the north swept along the bank of the Waipau river encountering a number of men and horses working on the main road. Articles of clothing, horses' nose-bags, small stones and branches of trees were whirled high in the air, while the water was churned up to a height of several feet. The ground this morning is strewn with debris. OLD SEfTLERS' DEATH. GORE, Nov. 30. Duncan Grillanders, a squatter, aged 81, died suddenly at Waikaia last night. He was one of the oldest pastoralists in Southland.
