On ,the West Coast and Westland alluvial mining of free gold by old methods returns large profits to wellmanaged concerns. An extract from the Westport Times of the 21st November, 1905, referring to the trial of the plant, states: — "An official trial of the new gravel pumps which have been put into the dredger Rubi Seddon was made yesterday, The chairman, members, and officials of the Board, with a good many leading Westport citizens, attended the trial, and it was admitted by all that the Rubi Seddon now fills all requirements as regards being able to considerably deepen the river and bay, irrespective of the material to he dealt with — that is,, sand, gravel, or' boulders. The gentlemen who saw the dredger's compacted hopper full of boulders, gravel, and sand discharged about one mile north of the bar, expressed their pleasure and surprise at the load dealt,, with, which equalled at least 500 tons. The Rubi Seddon is now capable of dredging and discharging at sea a quantity of 500 tons per hour, and making all allowance for delays, which will always necessarily occur, she should deal with at least 3000 tons of materials every full working day of eight hours. The Westport Harbor Board and its officials are to be highly congratulated in having procured a firsf-class up-to-date machine to deal with the ever-varying depths in the Buller river and its outlet. The class of pump now fitted into this dredger (manufactured by Messrs Thompson and Co., of Castlemaine, Victoria), have been used in Australia as fixed pumps for lifting wash for gold mining purposes, but have never before been used with trailing suction pipes for marine work, and now it has been proved to answer the purpose admirably." The leading article in the. Grey River Argus, published at /Greymouth, *and dated 20th September, refers to the Okarito Gold Recovery Co.'s venture .-.- follows: — "There would seem to be n> reasonable doubt that all the delta 1 > »i from the five mile beach to Commisfi' mers' Point was the result of a 1";ij; period of glaciation and the subseqv^iit action of rivers. Consequently there: is good reason to believe that every acre of ■ the Okarito lagoon should be gold bearing. . . . At a shilling a 'load, which ought not to [ he regarded as either rich or poor, the dredge ought to bring to the surface £54,000 worth of gold in the year." As indicating how rich in gold was the locality, the Hand Book of New Zealand Mines, page 141, quotes that from the 23rd February to the 19th May, the gold export from Okarito was as follows: — ozs. ozs.
