MANAIA.

[PBOM ODE OWN COEEESPONDBNT.] The golf season closed last Saturday, when the final of Mr Hastie's trophy was concluded, and resulted in a win for Miss Jones, Mrs Candy being run-ner-up. The past season has been a very successful one, there being more members in the club, and the attendance at the links was larger than previously and more interest taken in the competitions. The Manaia Brass Band sports are to be held in the Domain on Wednesday, November 9, and a good programme has been drawn up, The shopkeepers have decided to close their business places for the whole day as in previous years. The local band played out on . Wednesday evening in the Octagon, and again on Sunday afternoon in the Domain, when there was a large attendance of townspeople, and also a considerable number of country people, and all thoroughly enjoyed the programme which was gone through.. \ Quite a number of the local bowlers intend being present at the opening of the Opunake green next Wednesday if the weather is favorable. The social held in the Manaia Methodist Church on Thursday evening proved quite a success in spite of the downpour. Those who braved the elements were rewarded - with a fiood programme, in which the following took part: — Miss D. Patterson, Miss Loudon, Mr and Mrs French, Mr and Mrs Berry, Mr F. Reader, Miss Gamlin, Mr K. Hill. Miss Loudon sang "The Dream of Paradise," with violin and 'cello obligate • Duets were rendered by Mr and Mrs Berry and by Messrs Reader and Berry. Miss D. Patterson and Miss M..Hunt acted as accompanists for the evening. After the varied programme supper was handed round and heartily partaken of. At the close Mr Berry m a few well-chosen words returned thanks to all who had helped to make the social a success. The singing of the Doxology brought a pleasant evening to a close. Those who were present at the Methodist Church social the other evening enjoyed a treat in listening iio Mrs Berry. Manaia is the richer musically by her presence in our midst. \
