HAWERA BOROUGH BAND

♦ ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Hawera Borough Band was held on Friday evening, conductor Rushtpn presiding. Fifteen members were present. A letter was read from Mr E. Dixon asking the band to play outside of the Dominion Winter Show buildings during the evenings of the Methodist bazaar, to be held next week. It was decided to inform the Trustees that the Band would be willing to play on Wednesday and Saturday evenings. Owing to the change of secretaries the annual report was not presented, but Mr T. Muir, sen., submitted a balance sheet concerning the operations of the band since he took over the . books in July last, which showed there was a small credit balance. As against this there were outstanding accounts to be met. The conductor, secretary and treasurer were appointed a committee to enquire into the accounts and financial position of the band generally, and to bring down and report at a later meeting. The election of officers resulted as follows (subject to their consent) : President, Mr E. Barton (Mayor); vicepresidents, Messrs. G. V. Pearce, M.P., R. H. Nolan, H. Halliwell, A. J. Parsons, J. A. Turton, W. Rame, B. C. Bennett, F. W. Sutton, J. Higham, W. A. Parkinson, R. L. M. Kitto, Rev. Father Power, Revs. J. R. Shore, J. R. Cassell, F. W. Boys, Drs. MacDiarmid, Thomson and Campbell; band-sergeant, T. E. Muir, jun. ; corporal, D. Edwards ; lance-corporal, J. Green; secretary, T. E. Muir, sen., treasurer, G. Meyrick; committee, band sergeant, band corporal, secretary, treasurer, and bandsmen Fitzall and Pickering. The position of the conductor was considered in committee and subsequently it was announced that the Ban^ had decided to, engage Mr Rushton for a further period of three months. It was impossible to make a permanent appointment at present. Mr Rushton agreed that this was but a fair arrangement. He said he was willing to give all his. time provided the members were willing to work. He was sure that if members attended practices regularly there would soon be a good band in Hawera. He appealed to members to place the band first and not make it a secondary consideration. • It was decided that the band 'practise on Tuesday and Friday evenings. Four new members were elected.
