New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.'s stock report: — On the 10th inst. we held a clearing sale on account of Mr Jos. Martin, Opunake. The cows were a good lot and were well competed for. Best cows brought from £9 5s to £11 10s, others £7 to £9, backward and old cows £3 10s to £6, shorthorn bull £8, light draught horses up to £27 10s, half draught £14, farm sundries- at usual prices. On tho 12th inst. a clearing sale was held on account of Mr J. F. McGregor, Pihama The herd included a nice lot of purebred Ayrshires which sold well, although no high prices were obtained owing to shorthorn bulls having been used. Purebred Ayrshire cows brought from 7 to 9 guineas, yearling Ayrshire heiiers 4i to b£ gns., yearling Ayrshire bulls 5 to 8 gns, grade cows early calvers £6 to £7 10s, backward cows £3 5s to £5 10s, draught mares aged £24 to £30 10s,- cob £17, 2-year colt £20, yeaning colt by Laird of Athol £39, implements, furniture and farm sundries sold well. Uii the 13th inst. our usual monthly horse fair was held at TattersaH's, .Hawera, when about 100 horses came forward. Tne entry did not include many good sorts, the majority of this class being held tor the annual sales to be held next month. Heavy sorts of all descriptions sold very well, the majority being purchased for the Australian market. Heavy draughts brouglrfc up to £40, medium from £20 to £26, miJk carters and van horses from £16 to £22 15s, hacks £11 to £18. A pair of 3 and 4-year fillies, by Patronus, changed hands at £36. Oh the loth inst. our usual fortnightly stock sale was held at Kakaramea. There was a moderate yarding of cattle, for which there was a good demand, a good number of pigs were also penned, which realised top prices. Two and a half to 3-year bullocks (fat) brought £7 10s, 2-year steers (fat) £6 11s, torward oows £3 17s to £4 ss, store cows £3 Is to £3 15s, dairy cows £6 to £7 10s, dairy heifers £5 to £5 7s 6d, store pige (small) £1 to £1 4s, weaner pigs los to 16s 6d. On the 15th inst. we also held a springing heiier sale at Opunake. The yards were well, filled with a, useful class. Good dairy sorts were k'eeniy competed for and brought high prices. Choice 3-year heifers, close to calving, brought from £7 7s 6d to £8, others from £6 to £7, 2£-year springing heifers £5 10s to £6 2s bd, 2-year do. £4 17s 6d to £5 7s 6d, backward heifers £3 15s to £4 10s. On the 6th inst. we held a successful clearing sale on account of Mr Geo. Sparks, Alton. There was a large attendance, and bidding throughout was animated. Shorthorn dairy cows (close) brought £7 10s to £10 10s, backward cows £4 2s 6d to £6 10s, 2i-year heifers in calf (late calvers) £4 5s to £5 2s 6d, draught mares £40 to 46gns, hacks to £13, pony £16, mixed hoggets £12 3s, cull hoggets 7s 2d, cull ewes 5s 3d. Implements, furniture and sundries realised satisfactory prices. At Eltham on the 17th inst., owing to the inclement weather, only a moderate yarding of fitore , eoattle came forward. Prices were firm and most lines were quitted.- In the dairy yards we had a good muster, but prices for this class were rather lower than those ruling at recent sales'. Fat cows brought £5 18s, fat heifers £5, freshconditioned cows £4 13s to £4 18s, forward cows £3 19s to £4 12s, store cows JB3 5s to £3 16s, tinners £2 to £2 12s 6d, 2-year empty heifers £3 9s to £3 18s, yearling bulls £2 14s to £3, yearling heifers (choice) £2 17s 6d to £3 3s 6d, others £2 6s "to £ 295," springing dairy cows £6 to £8 10a, backward do. £4 5s to £5, 3-year springing heiiers (choice) £7 to £7 10s, others (good) £5 17s 6d to JS 10s, backward do. £3 15s to £4 15s. At Hawera, on the 18th inst., we had a small yarding of store cattle and a good muster. Prices all round were in vendors' favor, and most lines found buyers. In the dairy yards we had a good entry, and good dairy sorts were in demand. Hbme weeks ago the Hawera Techni- i cal School students decided t« hold a I students' social at the end of the term, the object of which was> not only to j have an evening of social intercourse, but also to inaugurate a fund for a li- 3 brary. The young lady students desire the realisation of the latter project, and are hoping their efforts will meet ( with success. Whatever sum is obtain- c t-d will carry a similar amount of subsidy from the Government. The com- » mittees met last evening to make final arrangements for the social, which i takes place on Friday evening. An interesting and enjoyable time should b» ] the ouiicome. A musical programme j has been arranged, which will be followed by various features arranged by t the entertainment committeee. Tha tickets cost the small sum of Is 6d, and tho students should have no difficulty in disposing of a large number. On Wednesday ov ySv >ing next, as will be seen by our adve ising columns, a performance of Van . llree's cantata, "St. Cecilia's Day," will be given in the Methodist Church as a compliment to the popular organist, Miss Barley, ' who is shortly retiring. This work is a very tuneful and pleasing one, and ' should draw a large audience. The cantata will be preceded by a short 1 misceSaneous programmle.
