' The Bureau or immigration last ,>e.jr assisted 43U8 immigrants to New isouth Wales, besides wmch 1231 otner new arrivals were placed in positions. Inis is the largest immigration gain lor twenty-three years. During tne four years since the introduction of the pre sent system, 14,9110 immigrants ha -re been assisted. A YEAR'S GAIN. , SYDNEY, August 18. The total gain by immigration last year, including those assisted by the Immigration Bureau, was 17,636. The report of the Director of the lmmigration Bureau states that, after Britain, the next largest contributor to tbe New South Wales population was New Zealand, from which country a gain of 7285 was made last year. From Canada came 211. Until two years ago tho movement between these -countries and New South Wales showed a lose to the latter . The report adds that the South African movement, by which New South Wales gained 3948 since 1906, was probably similar to that from Na»v Zealand, and may be now practically completed, all the residents of the State having returned. So far as assisted agriculturists are concerned, the Bureau's system is so complete thnt all the present arrivals can be despatched to employment within twentyfour hours of arrival. Were depots established for unassisted immigrants, the State could accept tens of thousands more yearly without any fear oi dislocating the lahor market.
