INVERCARGILL, April 11. Two prisoners, Albert Stockbridge, aged 22, serving eighteen months for breaking into the Carterton railway station, and Joseph Howie, aged 18, serving twelve months, one of a band who committed fifteen burglaries in Wellington and who was arrested at Happy Valley with a ' revolver in his possession, escaped from the gaol gang at 3 o'clock this afternoon. After an exciting chase Howie was captured five miles out by Gaoler Hawkins. Stockbridge gained the shelter of tho bush near the racecourse, and darkness cut the pursuit short. Men were posted all night, and the search will be resumed in the morning. Capture is considered almost certain.
