[press association.] - WELLINGTON, December 3. Cabinet has granted the Waihi Gold Mining Co. a license to utilise 10,000 horse-power from Hora Hora Falls, on the Waikato river, twelve miles above Cambridge. The lease is for a period of forty-two years, and the rental is 3s per horse-power per annum. This was the rate which was so strongly objected to by a West Coast syndicate. The Government reserve the right to take over the plant at any time during the currency of the lease in order to prevent any monopoly, the terms of acquisition being the actual value of the installation at the date of purchase, without any allowance for interest. Operations will be commenced immediately, as the company hopes to have the whole plant running within 18 months. The installation will cost £150,000. •

Bowlers at the Eltham green had their games brought to a termination yesterday afternoon by a thunderstorm. The rain was so heavy that within about twenty minutes the whole of the green was covered by a sheet of water an inch deep.

The funeral of the late Mrs Betts took place at Okaiawa on Thursday, and was largely attended. Messrs C. H. Washer, senr., J. Joll, T. Collins and J. S. Oughton acted as pall-bearers. The service was _ conducted by the Rev. Stent, of Manaia.

In ordor to make more room for liis machinery and also to provide batter accommodation for 'his compositors, Mr C. O. Ekdahl, of the Caxton Works, has added to his present building. The men nave now an excellent workroom.He has also installed an electric motor, and expresses himself well pleased with its work.
