ALTON.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
The School Committee met on Thursday night to consider ways and means of holding the annual picnic. It was resolved to give the children a treat on the breaking-up day, and the headmaster was empowered to purchase books to the value of £7, and in conjunction with Messrs Frew and Hodge to obtain toys for the smaller children. He was also asked to give the children subscription lists to take round to defray expenses. A social is to be held in the hall on the evening of the picnic.
A Patea firm has started hawking fish around Alton and Hurleyville once a week. Most- of the residents are very glad of the opportunity of getting fresh fish for a change. The first lot of cheese is now ready at the new factory to be taken into the grading works at Patea.
At the New Plymouth Show a distressing incident occurred. A lady wearing a summer costume was strolling across the ground whe nthe back of her skirt suddenly burst into flame, caused evidently by a lighted match carelessly thrown down by a smoker. Several gentlemen rushed to the, rescue and by rolling the lady on the grass the fire was soon extinguished. Fortunately (says the News) the lady was not burnled, though she' received a severe shock. The dress, of course, was ruined.
