SCULLING.

FOXTON CHAMPIONSHIPS

[press association.]

PALMERSTON N., December 2. The first heats of the Manawatu Sculling Handicap were decided to-day on the "Long Reach," above the Wirokino bridge, Manawatu river. The attendance was not large. The flower of the Australian and New Zealand sculling world had been brought together by Mr S. Messina, and as an additional attraction Mr William Beach, the unbeaten champion of the world, was present as umpire. Added to these attractions were a perfect course, both for the competitors and onlookers, and fine weather. The management had splendid facilities for handling a crowd of 2000 or 3000 people. There is every reason to believe that the final heats to be rowed to-day will attract a much larger gathering. Results: — First heat— S. Kemp (24sec) 1, T. Lawson. (60sec) 2, Mitchell (14sec) 3.. Also started: A. S. Green (30), W. T. Ogilvie (55). Won by a length and a half, Green gave up a mile from the iP'ost. . _ . ... , Second heat— A. G. Felton (24sec) 1, R. Green (68sec) 2, W. Webb (scr) 3. T. P. Green also started. Won by a length and a half, Webb two lengths away. Third heat — E. Lawson (20sec) 1; S. Hagney (lOsec) 2, J. Ellis (45sec) 3. Won by two lengths.
