Professor Voyle, of Berkeley, California, has invented a "drunkless" whisky — a beverage, which, if he is right, makes glad the heart of man without impairing his intellectual or locomotivS faculties. The new drink, we are told, "exhilarates without intoxicating"— cheers, as the poet .said of its domestic rival, but not inebriates. Professor Voyle has found out that it is not al- * oohol which does the mischief, but the element of cynamide, which neither the pot nor the patent still has hitherto managed to eliminate. If the professor is corroborated, John Barleycorn, like Joan of Arc and "Warren Hastings, will be entitled to a solemn recantation of accumulated slander — it will be the most tremendous piece of historical whitewashing ever known. We shall await with a somewhat eager interest an exhibition of the new kind of "forrardness," the subjects of which, we suppose, will see life rosily without seeing it double. It will have to be an improvement on the majority of American "substitutes" if it is to displace the older commodity, of which, with all its drawbacks, we may .say that we know the worst.
