TARANAKI LAND BOARD

The Taranaki Land Board met on Tuesday; present— Messrs F. Simpson (Commissioner of Crown Lands), Heslop, Rattenburv, Connett, and McCluggage.

SPOTSWOOD SETTLEMENT.

Pursuant to notice, Mr Heslop moved that the Board visit Spotswood Settlement on Thursdiy next, with a view of placing the property in a more satisfactory position for disposal. Seconded by Mr McCluggage and carried.

LANDS APPLIED FOR

Mrs F. G. Thomas forwarded an application for section 11, block 6, Aria, under renewable lease, as an addition to her holding. — Resolved that the application be approved as from Ist inst. The application of C. A. Skinner for sections 36 and 44, block 4, Paritutu, Spotswood Settlement, was again considered. — Resolved that the application be approved, and the Commissioner authorised to place the applicant in possession of the land. J. S. and G. M. Smith applied to' divide their holding, sections 10 and 11, block 15, Ngatimaru. — The application being premature, it could not be entertained. '

TRANSFERS

The following transfers will be referred to the Minister of Lands : — C. H. Christiansen to M. M. Hamerton, sections land 2, block 14, Ngatimaru; H. J. Wisken to T. H. White, section 17, block 15, Aria ; J. C. B. Walsh to R. Kent, section 5, block 9, Waro ; M. E. Smith to H. H. Richardson and others, sections 5 and 13, block 7, Cape ; J. P. P. Kelly to S. C. Jonson, section 35, block 16, Egmont ; A. H. Chisnall to V. J. Leatham, section 34, block 11, Ngaere; C. H. Bennett to F. J. Hopkins, section 24, block 8, Ngaere; Feoll Bros, to Walter and Wm. Narbev, section 100, block 10, Ngaere; W. H. Thompson to T. C. Brash, 1£ acres of section 1, block 15, Aria (as a dairy factory site).

The application, A. J. Kirkham to J. P. Matson, section 3, block 3, TVaro, was approved, provided the transferee is residing in a bona fide manner in three months.

SUB-LEASES.

Sub-leases will be forwarded to the Minister for approval : — G. Wenlock to A. Parkinson, sections 26, 27 and 28, block 11, Ngaire; T. K. Skinner to J. Bratli, section 2, block 2, Omona.

The Board decided to grant two months' extension of time for the registering of the following transfers: — TV. A. C. Fargie to R. Corbett, part section 6, block 14, Pouatu ; D. Roe to C. TVeston, section 9, bock 5, Egmont; J. Sexton to A. C. Perfect, section 10, block 10, Ohura.

Enquiry was made by the Messrs A. W. and H. J. Olsen if the rent conceded on section 5, block 7, Aria, would be

demanded on the transfer of the land to them. — Resolved that half the amount conceded is required to be paid.

T. E. Leach wrote explaining why the grazing on section 4, block 12, Aria, had been let to others. — Satisfactory.

RANGERS' REPORTS.

H. T. Twiss, Crown Lands Ranger, reported on the inspection of 67 holdings, comprising an area of 28,698 acres. Improvements required, £15,171; effected, £29,324. Forty-three selectors were resident, five had not complied with the conditions of residence, and ten had not effected sufficient improvements.

E. Tolme, Crown Lands Ranger, reported upon the inspection of seven holdings, comprising an area of '5092 acres. Improvements required, £601 ; effected, £380. Two selectors were resident and three had not complied with the conditions of residence, while two liad not effected sufficient improvements, and one selector had not complied with either of these conditions.

Resolved that the usual notice be given to those who have not complied with the Act.

HOLSWORTHY ROAD

Letters were read from the owners on each side of the portion of the closed Holsworthy • road between section E and section 36, Fitzroy district, agreeing to purchase half the width adjoining their respective properties. The ranger's report was laid on the table, and the Mangorei- Road Board advised that it had no objection to the sale of the lands.

The reports were adopted

Stanley J. Smith wrote asking that the portion; of the- closed Holsworthy road in his property, sections 86 and 87, Grey district, be given in exchange for a new road shown in the' proposed subdivision of land. — Deferred. IMPROVED FARM SETTLEMENT.

The following improved farm settlers' applications for Teases to issue were granted:— F. Ehvood, section 9, block 2, Aria ; J. D. Murphy, section 27, block 14, Ohnra; D. McKenzie, section 2, block ]3, Ohura ; J.. B. Ludtvig, section 3, block 13, Ohura; A. E. Person, section 3, block 12., Aria. EXPENDITURE OF THIRDS.

Proposals by local bodies for expenditure of thirds were approved : — Hawera County Council, £244 16s 7d; Waiwakaiho Road Board, £22 19.s lOd ; Clifton County Council, £434 4s 2d.

FORFEITURE.

C. and D. Mclntyre explained why no improvements had been effected on section 4, block 3, Mahoe. — Resolved that the section be declared forfeited.

A statement of improvements effected by R. A. H. Herbertson on sections 9 and 12, block 12, Opaku, was received. — Resolved that the section be declared forfeited.

GENERAL.

The rauger will report on the appli- ' cation of J. Hutchin's for an extension of his lease of section 1, block 13, Mimi. i J. H. Melton applied for a re-hearing I of the forfeiture of section 5, block 4, Opaku. — The forfeiture was rescinded, and six months' extension of time granted in which to effect deficient improvements. E. Sowry asked for extension of time till March, 1910, to complete purchase of freehold of section 13, block 11, Aria, • in the event of the appeal case being •' decided in favor of the lessees.—Approved. | The report of H. F. Russell, the valuer appointed by the Board, for the valuation of section 5, block 10, Opaku, and of the improvements thereon, was considered.— Resolved, that with regard to the original nin, No 5, now in the 1 temporary possession of Mr Fergusson, the report be adopted. W. Jameson's application for the issue of title to section 3, block 1, Kapara, was approved.

The Board could not entertain the application of R. Wilson for the temporary lease of section 19, block 2, Aria, at Kaeaea, for erection of slaughterhouse and yards thereon.

The Commissioner reported that a valuation for improvements, £44 4s, had been paid by the incoming selector of section 27, block S, Ngaere. — Consideration deferred.

W. Van Asch asked for section 4a, block 1, Kapara, to be added to his taken for Ridge road. — The Board considered this a matter for the Roads Department. Mr Clark renewed his application for section 2a, block 1, Ohura, but the Board adhered to its previous decision not to part with the land.

The Commissioner reported that John Day had paid arrears of rent on section 37, block 1, Upper Waitara, the tenancy of which was forfeited at last meeting. — Forfeiture rescinded.

J. V. Schield asked if he were not entitled to some compensation for loss of grazing on section 27, block 8, Ngaere, the grass having been eaten clown by stock prior to his taking possession. — Consideration deferred pending receipt of a report from the ranger.

The Commissioner submitted ,the question of terminating the tenancy of Crown land in block 9, Ohura, which was leased to Messrs Currie and Martin, in February, 1906, pending a survey of deviation of Ohura road at that spot. The survey was now completed. — Resolved that Mr Currie, as lessee of section 11, block 9, Ohura, be allowed to continue in occupation provided noxious weeds are kept down.

E. Yon Stunner applied for six months' exemption from residence on section 5, block 3, "Waro. — Resolved that he must be residing on the land within six months.

H. T. Joll applied for a further extension of time in which to complete improvements on section 15, block 8, and section 31, block 9, Mimi. — Six months' extension granted, on the understanding that no further concession will be allowed.

W. lienwood was granted six months' extension of time in which to effect improvements on section 4, block 9, Upper Waitara.

E. Julian applied to convert O.R.P. section 9, block 12, Waitara, to freehold, and J. B. Godkin made a similar request in regard to section 3 and 4, block 14, Ngatimaru.

It was decided to offer Mr McKoy a year-to-year tenancy of sections 9, 10, 22, 23, and 25, village of Tongaporutu, at 5s per acre, subject to termination by one month's notice ; otherwise the land will be put up for public competition.

M . Geever, who applied for two years' exemption from residing on sections 7 and 8, block 5, Mahoe, was allowed six months in which to reside or transfer.
