THE JOLL MEMORIAL.
The meeting of the Joll Memorial Committee, held in the Kapuni Hall on the 20th inst., was not largely attended, no doubt on account of tlie wet weather, and the fact that the Otakeho and Mangawhero rivers were in hicrh flood preventing all subscribers to the fund from that direction being present. Mr F. McGuire, of Okaiawa, took the chair, and on behalf of the executive explained that the portion of land it was proposed to purchase would cost £50 to £75, which would leave a little mom than £100 for the ftatue. It had been ascertained that £200 is the bedrock price of a statue. Since then Mrs Joll had offered three acres as a nucleus of a park, and suggested that Mr Bailey "s offer of five acres should be secured in. exchange, with £100 added. The executive approved of the exchange, and pledged itself to raise sufficient money to erect a statue at some near time.
Mr D. M. Scott strongly opposed tho scheme, and stated that he considered they were breaking faith with the former resolution passed in favor of erecting a statue only.
After considerable discussion Mr HasJock mov«d and Mr T. Whyte seconded, Th.it the statue be erected on the three acres offered by Mrs Joll. Mr D. J. Hughes moved as an amendment, That it be a recommendation to the executive to accept Mr Bailey's terms.
The amendment was carried without dissent.
A motion conveying the thanks of the meeting to Mr Bailey for his generosity in agreeing to the exchange was carried unanimously.
A vote of thanks to the Secretary and the Chairman closed the meeting.
