The annual meeting of the Kaponga Horticultural and General Produce Society takes places this evening in the Athenaeum Hall. Mr W. Gadsby, of Manutahi, left for Sydney this morning, taking with him four Clydesdales, which he will put jn the Sydney market. There was a small but appreciative audience in the Ope»a House on Wednesday evening when the Hellers gave their second entertainment in Hawera. Mr Heller kept everyone thoroughly interested in his sleight of hand work. Mr A. Black contributed a couple of songs. Madame Heller was again mystifying. "We understand that Messi-s Thos. Throughout yesterday the police, assisted by a number of settlers, dragged the Wainongoro river for the body of the late George Bollond, settler, of AVaihi, who was drowned while crossing Bryant's ford on Tuesday night, but at the time of writing the body had not been recovered. All the deep pools were thoroughly grappled, but no trace of the body or of the horse and cart could be found. The river was in high flood at the time of the accident, but it subsided two feet yesterday. The search was continued to-day. The trouble is that all the search has to be done from the river-bank, as a boat, in the present swollen state of the river, could not live.

The Inspector-General of Hospitals, Dr. Valentine, had something to say regarding the training of nurses, when speaking upon the question of hospital economy at the meeting of the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board (states the lierald). "There is no question," he said, "that our system of training nurses has absolutely failed, because we don't teach them anything about economy. For this reason the average nurse is a very bad housekeeper indeed. Many of them have not the slightest idea of economy. I went into the dining-room of a hospital the other day and found a 41b loaf weighing half a pound short. At' another hospital I found that the quantity of milk delivered one day was a gallon and a half short of what there should have been, and what was charged." "It is because they don't have to pay for it," said a member of the Board, interrupting Dr. Valentine. "It is because our system is wrong," replied the doctor. The Inspector-General said that nurses should specialise in various things, such as hospital economics and sanitation, as much as possible, and that the qualifications they possessed in these directions should be taken into consideration when promotions were made.

It was decided a working bee should be organised to cart gravel, etc., round the school; Mr J. Finlay to "judge and award prizes to children for outside work. Owing to the untimely death by drowning of a brother of one of our esteemed settlers a search party was organised to find the body in Waingongoro river. Mr Finlay, with him Mr Bretherton, teacher, examined the various plots and made the awards. The former in a short -speech referred to the use and utility of Arbor Day and then distributed the prizes.
