WORK AND WAGES.
■ DROVER'S DISPUTE SETTLED. [press association.] NAPIER, July 21. The Conciliation Council yesterday considered the Hawke's Bay drovers' dispute, and an agreement was arrived at satisfactory to all concerned. The minimum wage is fixed at 12s 6d per day for drovers and 10s 6d for packmen. The wages at present prevailing are in most cases higher than those just given, and the representatives of the employers have agreed to do all they can to see that no reduction is made in the existing rates. AN INTERPRETATION WANTED. WELLINGTON, July 21. Dr McArthur was asked to adjudicate on a section of the seamen's award by the Australasian Federated Seamen's Union. In order to take the matter into Court, the Union sued the Union Steamship Company for £10 penalty for an alleged breach of the award. The company is required to give seamen 24 hours' notice of dismissal, and the union desire dto know whether it was competent of the employer to give notice of dismissal away from port. In the case cited, it appears that the Unio:i Company gave notice at Westport to a seaman that he would be dismissed at Wellington. The union holds that notice should not be given until arrival in port at Wellington. His Worship reserved his decision.
