ANNUAL COMMITTEE MEETING.
In the absence of Mr A. Turnbull, S.M., through indisposition, Mr James Davidson presided at the annual meeting of the Licensing Bench, which was neld in t&e Courthouse, Hawera, on Thursday. The following applications were dealt with : — | W. E. Isherwood, renewal of i accommodation license, Manutahi Hotkl. Adjourned for eight weeks to enable enquiries to be- made regarding the wishes of the Public Trustee (in whom ' the house is vested) as to repairs. Publicans' licenses were renewed as followed : — Hawera: — A. J. Jury (Egmont). W. Greig (Empire),, B. Harrington (Central), J. J. Caldwell (Railway), J. Biggins (Shamrock), J. Hook (Commercial). Patea:— W. C. Hancock (Masonic), H. P. Littlewood (Central), C. • Diamond (Albion). Manaia:— G. D. McKenzie (Manaia), J. D. Bashford (Commercial), the latter subject to work beine; done as recommended by the Health Officer. Normanby: — A. G. Kimpton (Commercial) — the amount of fee to be notified by the Bench within ten days; J. J. Connell (Normanby), subject to sanitary improvements being carried out as recommended by the inspector. ■ Nukumaru : — W. Handley (Nuku.maru). \ Kakaramea : — A. Martin (Kakaramea). x - Waitotara :— G. R. Bruere (Waito tara) . ' Waverley:— C. W. Oakenfull (Clarendon). Kai Iwi:— J. Innes (Kai Iwi), subject to improvements recommended by ,the Health Officer. > New publicans' licenses were issued as follow : — Okaiawa: — H. H. Mace XOkaiawa). Hawera: — R. Grylls (Royal), subject to inspector's recommendations being carried out. , Manaia: — A. H. Lucena fWaimate) — amount of fee to be notified 'by the Bench within ten days.
Renewal of wholesale licenses were "ranted to GHbsoiis, Ltd.," Princes > street, Hawera, and Egmont street, Patea, the latter subject to the decision of Mr Turnbul], S.M., as to whether applicants can hold two licenses in the same licensing district. Transfer of an accommodation license was grant pd to O. H. Wimsett, in c oT-or of Wm. Fowler, in , connection with Alton Hotel, Alton. '
Wm. Fowler was granted an accommodation license for Alton Hotel, subject to certain improvements being carried out within the next three months.
IW. Smith. Hawera, obtained ' a renlewal of a New Zealand wine license.
With regard to J. Smith's application for renewal of publican's license for the 1 Commercial Hotel, Waver ley, it was explained that the premises had been burnt down on June 1, and plans for a new building had only been received on Thursday evening. The application was adjourned for one month to enable plans for the new building to be considered by all the parties concerned. A temporary license was granted in the meantime.
Relative to the application of J. H. O'Neil for the issue of a publican's * license for the Railway Hotel, Waitotara, both the Health Officer and the police reported unfavorably, the former stating that some of the rooms were unfit for Europeans to live in, and th© Police reporifcg that the bedclothes were dirty • and torn and the whole plnce wretchedly furnished and unsuit- ' able for an hotel. There were outhous'ps which should be removed, and which had been recommtended to be reirovd Ions: a^o. The applicant explained that certain rooms were set apart for the exclusive use of Maoris, ifc w* also stated that applicant hftd only taken over the place some six monflis af«. The Health Officer recommended certain alterations and improvements, •vti th» Bench allowed four weeks in which these are to be carried out.
