BOWLING
X Holding an inquest on the late tournament at Napier, a writer in the Telegraph says: To their great delight and surprise Pihama occupied pride of place for the citizens' trophy, and it is remarkable that a club with a membership of but thirteen should send away such a good four. The winners appear to be a strong sturdy lot; inured to fatigue and without a trace of "nerves," which naturally proved to their advantage.
On Wednesday next Hawera and Eltham Clubs meet on Eltham green.
Stratford will be represented at the tournament by Betts, G. Smart, R. Morison, J. D. Morison (skip); and O. M. Curtis, C. S. Curtis, J. Jackson, G. Jackson (skip).
"Mr H. Cook, who with Mrs Cook returned from a visit to England this week, arrived in Hawera last evening. He reports having had a very good trip in every way, and is greatly improved in health thereby.
The proposal of a member of the Hawera Hospital Board to reduce the maintenance rate for patients from 6s per day to 25s a week is (says the Stratford correspondent of the Taranaki Herald) likely to prove embarrassing to our hospital authorities, who have no endowments to help their finances. It is quite impossible to maintain a patient in the institution at anything like so low a rate as 25s per week. If all the beds were filled the whole time and everyone paid, the sum realised would not pay the staff salaries, let alone purchase provisions, fuel, drugs, and appliances.
